Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER): Research Conference 2019
Held annually, Research Conference highlights the latest national and international research in education. Research Conference 2019 will examine research around preparing students for life in the 21st century. It will bring together leading international and Australian researchers to provide insights into the best ways to identify, conceptualise, develop and assess these new priorities for schools in the 21st century.
Preparing Students for Life in the 21st Century: identifying, developing and assessing what matters
How do we best prepare young people for the rapidly changing world of the 21st century? What knowledge, understandings, skills and personal attributes will equip today’s students to survive and thrive in a world that none of us can predict? What are the implications of trends such as increasing globalisation, advances in technology and the changing nature of occupations for the work of schools? What role can schools play in addressing challenges such as social inequality, environmental sustainability and radicalisation? These questions are being addressed by nations around the world, often with converging answers. There is emerging consensus on the need to prioritise deep learning of disciplinary concepts and ways of thinking and working, rather than shallow learning of large bodies of factual and procedural knowledge. There is widespread agreement that students will require new levels of skill in collaborating, communicating, thinking critically, innovating, solving problems and applying what is learnt in new contexts, as well as skills to continue learning throughout life. And students’ knowledge, skills and understandings will need to be underpinned by values and dispositions that include a commitment to social inclusion, responsible citizenship and respect for human rights. Educational research is providing insights into the best ways to identify, conceptualise, develop and assess these new priorities for schools in the 21st century.
