The new state-of-the-art facility was developed in collaboration with Folk Architects and constructed, using funding available through a Changing Places Grant provided by the Victorian Government.
MCEC and the architects sought feedback and input from community members with lived experience to ensure their needs and preferences were considered in the design of the space.
Featuring warm materials, an inviting colour palette, interesting textures and soft lighting, the facility has been specifically created as a welcoming and safe environment. Bespoke furniture, including bench seating for carers, created to be both beautiful and comfortable to use, enhance the overall experience.
Universal Design principles are incorporated throughout the space. Fully functional and hygienic fixtures and fittings such as a height-adjustable adult changing table, a ceiling track hoist system and a centrally located peninsula toilet, ensure the facility is inclusive for all users.
MCEC's Changing Place is located centrally within the venue, close to Plenary theatre, Goldfields Café and the Exhibition Centre car park, as well as in close proximity to the surrounding retail and dining precinct.
The new facility will enable children, young people and adults with profound or multiple disabilities to visit MCEC and participate in the diverse range of events we host, including events that specially attract people with disabilities such as the Melbourne Disability Expo, Disability Connections Expo, Source Kids Disability Expo and the Variety Kids Christmas Party.
In addition to the new Changing Place facility, the adjoining Parents Room has also been upgraded, continuing a warm, inviting feeling throughout both spaces and providing accessible facilities for all ages and abilities.
The opening of the Changing Place facility is a major step in the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust’s Accessibility Action Plan, which was launched earlier this year.

MCEC Opens New Accessible Facilities

Executive Chef Peter Haycroft said the new menu demonstrates MCEC’s creativity and expertise.

MCEC’s food philosophy, inspired by Melbourne’s diverse, innovative and multicultural nature, ensures that every dish is not only delicious but also reflects the city's vibrant culinary culture.
80% of the produce has been sourced from the finest growers and creators across Melbourne and Victoria. This also extends to the beverage packages, which feature locally sourced wines, craft beers and specialty cocktails and mocktails. MCEC is excited to announce a new partnership with local Geelong brand, the Curious Cabinet for delicious non-alcoholic options, and continue its collaboration with globally renowned Four Pillars Gin.
Furthering its commitment to sustainability, MCEC is proud to launch With Purpose packages across the entire menu range, designed to create a positive impact. With Purpose are not individual dishes, MCEC’s culinary team have created an entire menu package with each course specifically designed to complement the next.
With Purpose packages showcase suppliers that share our commitments to sustainability and mindful selections have been made throughout to reduce waste, minimise food packaging and support ethical food production. All surplus produce will be donated to our community partner OzHarvest. Last year over 3,000 kg of food was rescued, equating to 6,746 meals for those in need.
With Purpose packages are offered at a lower price, enabling event organisers to reduce their overall event spend, while also minimising their environmental impact.
Executive Sous Chef of Culinary Development, Karl Edmonds said, 
“MCEC’s new With Purpose packages not only provide delicious options for guests but also align with our commitments to environmental responsibility. By choosing these packages, event organisers can make a positive impact without compromising on quality or taste.”
The entire menu range incorporates micro herbs grown onsite as well as locally, ethically and sustainably produced seafood including Hiramasa Kingfish, Etty Bay Barramundi and Bass Strait Scallops.
Dietary requirements are once again considered throughout the menu. Something For Everyone, an entirely vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free range, is also available, creating a flavour-packed experience with inclusivity at the forefront.
Another highlight is the new Flavours of Country gala dinner menu, a three-course set meal celebrating Australia, with a vibrant blend of local produce and native ingredients.
“Victoria is famous for its exceptional produce and this really shines through our Flavours of Country gala menu,”
 Karl said.
“Think sustainably caught fish, locally farmed chicken and beef perfectly paired with native flavours like Davidson plum, saltbush, bush tomato, Kakadu plum, lemon myrtle and more,”
 he added.

MCEC Launches New Menu Showcasing Culinary Excellence with a Conscience

The Venue of the Year Award highlights MCEC’s reputation for hosting world-class events, attracting millions of visitors every year, boosting the local economy and shaping Melbourne’s vibrant cultural scene. The award also recognises MCEC’s industry-leading products, services and commitment to corporate social responsibility. 
During the year, MCEC invested in technology upgrades to improve the delegate experience, including new state-of-the-art LED screens in Plenary and accessible digital event technology, which was utilised by over 3,000 people in the last year. 
MCEC also launched a modern, accessible website with resources to help customers in their event planning process. The website features 360-degree virtual tours and the Positive Impact Guide to help our customers deliver more inclusive, sustainable and impactful events.

MCEC took home Venue of the Year at the inaugural Australian Business Events Association Awards last night.

MCEC Crowned Australian Venue of the Year

In 2023-24, MCET generated $777 million in economic impact for the State of Victoria, as well as achieving important climate change, water, procurement, equality and recognition targets.
MCEC proudly hosted 720 events, including the high-profile ASEAN Commemorative Summit, Lions International Convention, the largest AIME in a decade, and the BBC Earth Experience, direct from its world premiere in London. 3.2 million people visited MCEC, a 23% increase from last year.
In an important milestone, MCET launched its latest Accessibility Action Plan in 2023-24, which was developed with input from people with lived experience along with expertise from accessibility consultants in the tourism industry.
MCEC’s innovative returnable coffee cup program served over 894,000 delegates with reusable stainless-steel cups, preventing thousands of disposable cups from ending up in landfill.
During the year, MCEC developed a carbon emissions inventory, calculating Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. By including Scope 3 emissions, MCEC is extending its responsibility beyond its direct operations and encouraging sustainable practices along the entire value chain. The carbon inventory will also be used to develop a roadmap to achieve net zero by 2050.
Continuing its commitment to supporting leading Australian charities and community organisations, MCEC celebrated a decade of support for the Good Friday Appeal and OzHarvest, and workplace giving increased by 297%.
In Geelong, Nyaal Banyul project partners have established a gold standard for social procurement during the construction of Nyaal Banyul, providing fully funded training for 28 trainees or apprentices who have experienced barriers to employment.
MCET also collaborated with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners to develop the award-winning brand identity for the future venue, which takes inspiration from the venue’s gifted name and the landscapes and heritage of Wadawurrung Country.

Events Deliver Impact in Melbourne, Geelong and Beyond

The Victorian Business Event Venue Award recognises venues that provide the highest quality facilities, services and events, and the important contribution of business events in Australia’s tourism landscape.
Chief Executive Natalie O’Brien AM was proud to accept the award for the second year in a row, confirming MCEC’s industry-leading reputation.
“MCEC welcomes millions of visitors from around the world every year, boosting the economy and supporting the growth of local businesses.” 
“We pride ourselves on providing world-class services and facilities, and everyone who visits leaves inspired and excited.”
“We’re honoured to accept the award and to be recognised amongst such a high calibre of finalists.”  
The award recognised MCEC’s progressive innovations including the newly launched website, which features 360-degree virtual tours, allowing customers and visitors alike to explore the venue and plan their visit, no matter where they’re located. 
MCEC also hosted a number of high-profile events during the year. 
At the 2024 ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, nine world leaders and prominent CEOs, community leaders and academics gathered to discuss trade, climate action, maritime cooperation, and the cultivation of emerging leadership. MCEC delivered innovative solutions, robust safety measures and a high level of service to meet the expectations of the high-profile attendees. During the conference, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced comprehensive new initiatives worth over $500 million, aimed at deepening economic, cultural, educational and environmental ties with Southeast Asia, showcasing MCEC’s impact beyond the events we host. 
MCEC was also the only venue in the Asia-Pacific region to host to the renowned BBC Earth Experience, an audio-visual journey with bespoke narration from Sir David Attenborough. Direct from the London premiere, the experience drew a crowd of over 500,000 people over six months.
The Lord Mayor’s Award recognises businesses in metropolitan Melbourne that have demonstrated a commitment to responsible tourism. 
During the year, MCEC became the first convention centre in Australia to introduce a permanent Returnable Cup program, serving over 894,000 delegates with reusable stainless-steel cups.
MCEC launched its latest Accessibility Action Plan, in collaboration with consultants in the tourism industry and people with lived experience, as well as facilitating work placements for four people with disabilities through our partnership with Alkira. 
Recognising that many event organisers share our commitments towards environmental, social and economic impact, MCEC also developed a Positive Impact Guide, to help our customers infuse corporate social responsibility into events held at the venue. The online toolkit provides customers resources to reduce the environmental footprint of their events, honour and engage Traditional Owners, make their events more accessible and inclusive, as well as elevating delegate experiences through our community partnerships.
Ms O’Brien congratulated the entire MCEC team on the achievements.

Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) took home Gold for the Business Event Venue Award for the second year running, as well as the Bronze for Lord Mayor’s Award at the prestigious VTIC Victorian Tourism Awards last night.

MCEC Awarded Best Business Event Venue for the Second Year in a Row

MCEC Sustainability Manager, Kristen Gillespie said as a hub for collaboration and innovation, MCEC provides the perfect platform for progressive discussions and solutions to address pressing environmental challenges.  
“We’re proud to host both the Waste Expo and All-Energy conference under one roof, highlighting the synergy between these important industries to create a brighter future for us all.”  
The Waste Expo brought together the brightest minds in waste management and resource recovery to shape a cleaner, greener future.  
During the expo, MCEC operated a Zero Waste Café, which featured 33% plant-based items, no plastic packaging and 100% reusable cutlery, crockery and glassware. Any leftover items were donated to food rescue organisation, OzHarvest. 
To coincide with the expo and Sustainability Day, Goldfields Cafe served locally roasted speciality coffee, hot chocolate and certified organic and fair-trade tea, in edible cups, made from locally sourced oats and grains. 
“The Waste Expo was the perfect opportunity to highlight the innovative solutions we’ve developed to reduce our impact on the environment, and challenge the industry to deliver greener events,”
 Kristen said. 
At the All-Energy Australia conference, important discussions on renewable energy, energy management and sustainability took place. 
A fully recyclable cardboard trade show stand, designed by Enphase and Opal, which is a leading sustainable packaging manufacturer, was unveiled. The stand featured a cardboard life-size house and is 100% recyclable, eliminating over 80% of waste that traditional expo stands generate.
“Our partnership with Opal represents one more way that Enphase supports and leads sustainable innovation. Enphase is transforming exhibitions and setting a new standard for environmental responsibility across industries,”
 said Patrick Matweew, General Manager at Enphase Energy ANZP. 
“This life-size cardboard house shows what’s possible when innovation and sustainability join forces. It’s more than just reducing waste, it’s about creating a practical, reusable structure that can serve as a model for future events,”
 said Chris Daly, Executive General Manager Packaging at Opal. 
“We’re excited to host such a forward-thinking project. This recyclable cardboard stand supports our own industry-leading sustainability practices, and we hope it will inspire others to think creatively about reducing their environmental impact,”
 Kristen added.

MCEC was proud to host the Waste Expo and All-Energy Australia conference this week, showcasing the latest innovations in waste reduction and renewable energy, aligning with MCEC’s industry-leading sustainability practices.

All Energy, No Waste Showcased at MCEC

This recognition highlights MCEC’s outstanding commitment to providing valuable opportunities to students of the Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services. 
Five students - Ashley Hayat, Finn Gleeson, Luka Vannutini, Tiana Cormick and Shannon Goldrick - completed the six-month traineeship program and have now secured ongoing employment at MCEC. 
Luka Vannutini, one of the talented graduates, discovered his passion for AV during his high school years, assisting with school productions and musicals. After completing his Diploma at RMIT, Luka embarked on the traineeship program at MCEC, where he gained invaluable practical experience. 
“During my Diploma I worked on vision, but being able to do it in a practical setting within MCEC has really taught me how everything works and how to do things properly. I’ve really been challenged to build vision sets in a variety of different methods and situations.”
Luka was supported by his mentors throughout the program, which involved completing a variety of hands-on tasks and advanced skills training in areas including audio mixing, lighting operation, projection mapping and video production.
“I’d really like to thank my fellow crew members, they’ve always been very open and friendly towards me and other grad techs and new starters. There’s a wealth of information here and they’re always willing to share.
“And now, as I approach a few months out of being a graduate tech, I find myself teaching new hires as well, so the cycle continues for the better.”
Since gaining ongoing employment at MCEC, Luka has put his skills to the test, working on a variety of different events. 
“At the NSW Premier’s Dinner I was working on lighting. We had two meeting rooms which aren’t our normal gala dinner spaces, but we managed to build some very interesting event lighting setup in rooms that don’t typically house that kind of technology,”
 he said. 
“I was very proud of what we achieved, creating an unorthodox solution to an interesting situation,”
 he added. 
David Strangio, Head of Technology Services, emphasised how the success of RMIT graduates in the MCEC AV traineeship program highlights the critical role of industry partnerships in shaping tomorrow's workforce.
"At MCEC, we're proud to offer state-of-the-art AV infrastructure throughout our venue, supported by a team of dedicated experts in audio, vision, lighting, multimedia, AV systems, communications, and rigging. Our team is passionate about sharing their knowledge and inspiring the next generation of AV professionals,"
 he said.
"We are deeply committed to providing meaningful opportunities for students, helping them grow and laying the foundation for a thriving career in the live production and audio visual industry,"
 he added.

MCEC AV Traineeship Program wins Education Partnership Award

MCEC and Starlight partner to bring Melbourne’s culinary giants together for an evening of fun, joy and laughter to raise funds for sick children and their families. 
Guests were spoiled by canapes and a five-course degustation curated by leading Victorian chefs including Benjamin Cooper (Chin Chin), Guy Grossi (Grossi), Jacqui Challinor (Nomad) and Josep Espuga (pt Leo Estate), Alejandro Saravia (Victoria by Farmer’s Daughters) and Peter Haycroft (MCEC).
The well-renowned chefs used their signature styles to create a unique menu, highlighting some of Victoria’s best producers including Infinity Blue, Sher Wagyu, Salt Kitchen Charcuterie and Aurum Poultry. 
Inspired by champagne and caviar, MCEC’s award-winning team served canapes of butter-poached lobster macarons with Yarra Valley caviar and beach herbs alongside mushroom arancini with porcini cream and pickled celeriac.

and guest chef on the night, Alejandro Saravia reflected on his experience working in the kitchens at MCEC.
“Any preconceptions about event catering are quickly dispelled when you enter the kitchen at MCEC.

This year’s event raised over $540,000 to help seriously ill children receiving care at leading hospitals around Melbourne.
MCEC’s Chief Executive Natalie O’Brien AM said the Starlight Five Chefs Dinner is a highlight for many and a collective effort from the entire team.

As a proud sponsor of the Starlight Children Foundation’s Five Chef’s Dinner, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) hosted four of Melbourne’s biggest names in food on Thursday, raising funds to grant 32 life-changing Starlight Wishes.
