MCEC's Ruby Scrimizzi Extends Impact of BBC Earth Experience

By Maddi Devoy|

A leader in sustainability, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is proud to be home of the breathtaking BBC Earth Experience, a testament to our shared commitment to environmental consciousness and responsible practices. MCEC's Food and Beverage Team Leader, Ruby Scrimizzi is paving the way in integrating sustainable practices into the experience.

Ruby, who is studying a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Sustainability, was nominated by MCEC to undertake a 6-week internship as Sustainability Coordinator for the BBC Earth Experience. Ruby played a crucial role in scoping the carbon footprint of the experience.

"I've been able to get firsthand exposure talking to suppliers, gathering data such as energy consumption and waste consumption to get an idea of what the carbon footprint for this event is. I want to start my career in sustainability, so it has been really amazing to step into that world," Ruby said.

Ruby's passion and dedication to environmental awareness has not gone unnoticed. As a result of her internship, Ruby has now been offered a role with the BBC Earth Experience education team.

Ruby assists educators in facilitating workshops for school children, inspiring them to create positive impacts on the world.

"I think the way that the world is going, it's unfortunately up to my generation and the younger generations to pick up on past mistakes and the lack of understanding that we had about our impact on the planet.”

“The younger generations are a driving force for this, and we’re able to shape and change our future because, at the end of the day, it’s our future that’s at stake," Ruby said.

The BBC Earth Experience is a captivating audio-visual journey through the seven continents, narrated by Sir David Attenborough.

Sustainability has been at the heart of the development and operation of the experience, from using energy-efficient tech, to working with responsible suppliers and launching the sustainable Habitat Café .

The experience features powerful storytelling, inspiring people to consider their impact on the environment.

“What I really hope for people to get out of the BBC Earth Experience is to become more aware of what is happening to the planet. I want people to be inspired to think, what can I do to make a change and how can I contribute to something that's beneficial for everybody’s future?” Ruby concluded.

Due to popular demand, the BBC recently announced its Melbourne season has been extended until Sunday 28 April 2024.

They have also introduced dedicated sessions for adults only twilight sessions, senior mornings, pram sessions and relaxed sessions. Tickets are available on the BBC Earth Experience website .
